Yeppoon and Emu Park sit on the Capricorn Coast, 40-odd kilometres from Rockhampton. That distance means most Rockhampton-based NDIS providers don't routinely service the area. For participants on the Coast, this creates a real access gap.

NDIS access on the Capricorn Coast

The Capricorn Coast — Yeppoon, Emu Park, and surrounds — has roughly 400-500 NDIS participants based on regional disability data. The provider market is small and the access situation is among the more challenging for any region in Queensland.

The basic problem: Yeppoon is too far from Rockhampton for most Rockhampton providers to service efficiently, but too small for many providers to base operations there. The result is that Capricorn Coast participants often have very limited choice.

Locally, you may find:

A small number of personal care providers operating with Yeppoon-based workers.

Some allied health practitioners with weekly or fortnightly outreach to Yeppoon.

Limited day program options — some participants travel to Rockhampton.

Plan management (works fine remotely).

Telehealth options for psychology and other phone-friendly services.

What's harder:

Specialised support coordination (mostly Rockhampton-based).

Specialised therapy disciplines.

Group programs and structured day activities.

After-hours support delivery.

Distance from Rockhampton services

The Yeppoon-to-Rockhampton drive is around 40 minutes each way on a good day. For a one-hour appointment, that's nearly two hours of travel. For workers, that travel time eats into shift duration significantly.

This affects different services differently:

For occasional appointments (specialist OT, psychiatrist), travel to Rockhampton is workable.

For regular ongoing services (personal care twice a day), Rockhampton-based delivery isn't realistic — you need locally-based workers.

For weekly services, the practicality depends on shift length and worker willingness to travel.

Some Rockhampton providers travel up periodically (e.g. a coordinator visiting once a fortnight). This works for some types of support but isn't a substitute for daily presence.

Seareal's Capricorn Coast coverage

Seareal works with participants on the Capricorn Coast through our Rockhampton operation. We deliver:

Personal care and household support, with locally-based workers where we have capacity.

Plan management — works fine remotely.

Support coordination, including for transitions and complex situations.

Travel-friendly arrangements when our Rockhampton workers visit.

We work with realistic expectations about what coastal delivery looks like — we can't offer the same flexibility as we do in Rockhampton city — but we can usually find workable arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the same NDIS supports in Yeppoon as in Rockhampton?

Most types, yes. The constraint is provider availability and travel-related limitations. Some specialised supports realistically need Rockhampton-based delivery.

Are there NDIS providers based in Yeppoon?

A small number, mostly small operators. For specialised services or wider choice, Rockhampton-based providers travelling to the Coast is usually how it works.

Is it worth moving to Rockhampton for better NDIS access?

For most participants, no. Local connections, family, and lifestyle usually outweigh service access differences. Plus, the move itself is a significant disruption.

What about Emu Park specifically?

Emu Park has slightly less local provider availability than Yeppoon. Most Yeppoon-based providers will service Emu Park; few Rockhampton-based ones travel that far routinely.
